Obituary of Mrs. Ann Jane Dunlap Ellison:
Death of Mrs. W. A. Ellison
On last Sabbath morning about 8 o’clock Mrs. Ann Jane Dunlap Ellison died at the home of her son-in-law, Dr. A. B. Blaydes, at Atoka, after a lingering illness of several years.
Mrs. Ellison was born January 22, 1842, near Ballywaney, Ireland, and was therefore in her 79th year. At the tender age of seven years she, in company with her parents, left her native land on October 11, 1849, and sailed for America in the old time sail ship, landing in New Orleans abou the middle of December, and from there up the Mississippi to their destination, Randolph, landing in that old town on the morning of Christmas day. That long voyage was made memorial to her by the death of her father on ship, who was buried in mid-ocean.
After landing in Randolph, Mrs. Ellison’s mother and five-fatherless children settled in Tipton county in the neighborhood of Dunlap Orphanage, where practically the greater part of her life was spent.
On January 24, 1868, Mrs. Ellison was married to Mr. W. A. Ellison who, with one daughter, Mrs. A. B. Blaydes, of Atoka, survive her; also one aged sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Spain. Four sons preceded her to the grave, also two brothers, the late W. H. and James Dunlap.
Mrs. Ellison was a splendid type of Christian woman, and was a consistent member of the Salem A. R. P. church from her girlhood. She adorned that profession in a meek and humble way in all her walks of life – as wife, mother, sister, or friend – endeavoring to do all the good she could, shedding sunshine and live in the pathway of all who came in contact with her. The evidence of the high esteem of her life was shown by the number of friends who attended the funeral services and the large floral offerings at the grave.
The funeral services were held in Salem church on Monday at 11 o’clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. B. Betts, assisted by Rev. E. P. Lindsay, of Memphis, after which her remains were laid to rest in the family lot in Salem cemetery.
