Mr. Nick A Naifeh , aged 45 years, a prominent merchant of this city, died at 5 o’clock Monday morning at the Augustino Hospital, Chicago, following an operation the night before. His death was a shock to his many friends in Covington. His health had been impaired for about three months.
Mr. Naifeh, accompanied by his physician, left Covington Saturday night for Rochester, Minn., to undergo an operation at the infirmary of Mayo Brothers, but on account of his weak condition he was forced to abandon the trip upon reaching Chicago. At the time the operation was performed the surgeons in attendance held out little hope for his recovery and when the incision was made it was discovered that he was dying of a cancer of the liver, which was too far advanced for his relief by the operation.
Mr. Naifeh was born in Syria, Asia Minor, and when quite a young man he boarded a steamer for the United States, having lived in this country continuously for 26 years.
About 12 years ago Mr. Naifeh located in Covington and established a dry goods and clothing business, which shoed a steady and prosperous growth until his death. He was a public-spirited citizen and was thoroughly Americanized. He had many strong friends among the people of this community as well as throughout the county.
Mr. Niafeh was a member of the Greek Orthodox church and belonged to many fraternal organizations, including the Masonic and Elk lodges.
The remains reached here Tuesday morning for burial Wednesday afternoon in Munford cemetery. the funeral was conducted from the family residence at 1:30 o’clock by Rev. L. J. Sherrill, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, after which the body was interred with Masonic honors by Dunham Lodge No. 150, of this city.
Mr. Naifeh leaves a wife, Mrs. Riatha Naifeh, four sons, William, Fred, Mitchell and Robert, and three daughters, Pauline, Helen and Julia.
