Beech Chapel Church Sign
Beech Chapel CME Church is located on the Mason-Charleston Road in Mason, TN. It is an African-American church. Also, the cemetery is located across the street from the church and there are approximately 50 graves.
According to the current pastor, the church closed last July (2018) due to construction work. It was established in 1893 but burned down on 24 Dec 1980. Later, it was rebuilt in the 80s.
The oldest known grave in the cemetery is that of Polly Anderson Burchett who is the wife of Lewis Burchett (d. 1938) – He is also buried in the cemetery. Polly was born in 1853 and died May 26, 1933. The next oldest grave in the cemetery is that of John Elbert Claybon Sr. He was born in 1876 and died on December 19, 1937.
Ellen Smith Maclin is also buried at Beech Chapel. She was the daughter of Green Smith and Leathy Maclin (1828-1915). Ellen married Waverly Burchett on November 27, 1878, in Tipton County. They had four children during their marriage. They were Henry Washington, Joe Waverly, Charlie and Mattie. Ellen’s marriage to Waverly ended some time before 1893, as she married William Joseph Maclin on November 19, 1893. They had six children during their marriage. They are Leatha Ora, James, William Joseph Green, Maime, Roosevelt, and Daisy Maude.
