Elm Grove Church and Cemetery are located on Elm Grove Rd in Burlison, TN. The church is in a newer building with the cemetery on its left. There are approximately 200 graves in the cemetery.
The oldest grave in this cemetery belongs to William N Angus. The next oldest marked grave in the cemetery is that of James Franklin Lavelle. James was born to James (1817-1887) and Ellen Matilda O’Hennigan Lavelle (1819-1887) in February 1834 in County Mayo, Ireland. He married Tilitha Hill Hartsfield Davis (1843-1933) in the year of 1863. The couple had four children. The third oldest grave in the cemetery is that of Solon L Angus. Solon was born to William Werter Angus (1824-1856) and Jane Lennie Ralph Angus Woodard (b. 1834) on December 29, 1851, in Tipton County. He married Susan Mary Virginia Sullivan (1853-1886) in 1877. After Solon’s death, Susan married a Yarbro. Solon died on September 13, 1880, at the age of 28.
There are several old headstones in the cemetery. Those worth noting are Solon L Angus, Bishop ALbertus Billings, James and Ellen Lavelle, Opal Marie Knight, Samuel P Glass, Ida D Yarbro, and Billy Deen Poole. One of the memorials I saw on FAG was that of Henry Logan Ringstaff. He was born on October 19, 1858, and died on December 23, 1914, at the age of 56 yrs. 2 mos. and 4 days. His obituary reads: Mr. H. L. Ringstaff, a well-known and prominent citizen of the 3rd district, died of cancer at this home in the vicinity of Detroit on Wednesday of last week at noon, after a long illness and his burial occurred in Elm Grove graveyard the day following at 1 o’clock. Mr. Ringstaff was a member of the Methodist Church, was 56 years of age at the time of his death and is survived by his wife, one son and four daughters. He was a useful citizen and a good man and his death is much deplored in his community. (The Covington Leader, Thursday, December 31, 1914)
