J. R. Wells Slips Into Jail from Slip Up, Tennessee.
He is Wanted at Clarendon, Arkansas, For Crookedness.
A FORGER CAUGHT IN SLIP-UP, TIPTON COUNTY | Some days ago Sheriff Cannon received a letter from the firm of B. F. & G. F. Johnson, merchants of Clarenden, Ark., asking him to look out for and arrest a young man named J.B. Wells, aged about 25 years, who had perpetrated a forgery upon them, and stating they would pay a reward of $25 for his capture. The letter contained the statement that Wells was believed to be in Memphis or Shelby county, as he has relatives here. The Messrs. Johnson’s letter was indorsed on the back by Wm. R. Moore & Co., and also contained references to other leading houses here. The sheriff was unable to hear anything of Wells until day before yesterday, when he received information that he was engaged in getting out lumber with A. J. Curtis and a man named Yancy, near a place called Slip-Up, in Tipton county. Deputy Sheriff Pope was at once dispatched to arrest the man, which he succeeded in doing with but little difficulty, and yesterday brought him to this city and Iodged him in jail, where he awaits the arrival of the Arkansas authorities, Wells having agreed to go without a requisition. The prisoner is a very good looking young man.
