Adkison | Joseph Bernard | 4 Jan 1892 | Salem Associate Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery; Medal of Honor Recipient; Sergeant in Company C, 119th Infantry 30th Division; CMOH for bravery near Bellicourt, France, on September 29, 1918. His citation reads "When murderous machinegun fire at a range of 50 yards had made it impossible for his platoon to advance, and had caused the platoon to take cover Sgt. Adkinson alone, with the greatest intrepidity, rushed across the 50 yards of open ground directly into the face of the hostile machinegun kicked the gun from the parapet into the enemy trench, and at the point of the bayonet captured the 3 men manning the gun. The gallantry and quick decision of this soldier enabled the platoon to resume its advance". His Medal was issued in 1919. He was one of six Tennessee soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor during World War I (the others being James E. Karnes, Milo Lemert, Edward R. Talley, Calvin J. Ward, and the well known Alvin C. York). | |

Soldier’s uncovered tale embodies Tennessee’s WWI legacy
by Jake Lowary | 6 Apr 2017
A relatively unknown story of one Tennessean’s tale of wartime volunteerism during World War I could have landed him in legal trouble.
Most who have a smattering of knowledge of Tennessee military history or World War I know of Alvin C. York’s heroism in the Argonne Forest in western France — he’s arguably one of the most famous American veterans of the war and his generation — but few know of the adventures of Zephaniah Porter Broom.
But that could soon change.
Broom’s legacy is just one of thousands that will be celebrated Thursday during a ceremony outside the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. declaration of war against Germany on April 6, 1917.

Some 3,500 poppies will be placed and a wreath laid in the courtyard of the War Memorial, a building constructed to honor the fallen of World War I. In total, more than 130,000 Tennesseans were mobilized for the war effort.
Broom’s story, though, is different.
He first went overseas to England alone, and records show he later turned up in Canada in October 1915, where he lied about his nationality to volunteer and serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Openly trying to enlist as an American with the Canadian Army would have posed legal hurdles for Broom.
Broom said he was from Ontario “with his Knoxville accent,” according to Lisa Budreau, senior curator of military history at the Tennessee State Museum.
He was wounded in France in September 1916 and returned to Canada to recover.
Broom’s story is told, in part, in letters to his mother, scrawled on letterhead from the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
“We are having a great time here. Returned soldiers get a fine reception in Canada,” he wrote in a letter to his mother dated Aug. 9, 1917, which will be on display as part of an exhibit marking the 100th anniversary of the American entry into the global conflict. The exhibit opens Thursday at the Tennessee State Museum.
Budreau said she didn’t know of Broom’s tale until some of the records, including the letters he wrote to his mother, arrived from the Canadian Archives, and she started digging through some of the state’s own archived records.
“He deserts — he just buggers off to Knoxville,” she said.
Indeed, after the U.S. entered the war, he felt compelled to serve with his fellow Tennesseans. He had served with the Tennessee National Guard from 1910 to 1915. And after he left Canada, he joined the U.S. Army’s 30th Infantry Division in October 1917.
Broom’s tale is certainly unique, but Budreau and other officials want to recognize the sacrifice of not only those who died during the war, but also Tennessee’s involvement in the conflict.
“Tennessee was in there so soon, I mean right from the beginning,” she said.
So soon, in fact, that the training camps for recruited soldiers had not even been established yet. Once in France, the Tennesseans who were a part of the 30th Infantry Division fought alongside the beleaguered British forces. The 30th was one of two American divisions that did not serve with the rest of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe.
“We were right into the fighting,” Budreau said. “It was a trial by fire, you could say.”
In total, six soldiers from Tennessee were awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the fighting, most notably the effort of York to lead the capture of 132 Germans with just seven other men.
Broom’s story was nearly forgotten, but efforts have begun to protect the legacy of Broom and other World War I stories for generations.
State officials are traversing the state to collect and scan records, letters, photos and other items that carry forward the accounts of those who served.
“It’s important that we do this now, before more of these century-old items are lost or damaged beyond repair,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett said in a news release.
The U.S. in World War I
World War I broke out in Europe in August 1914. But the United States did not get involved for nearly three years. On April 6, 1917, Congress approved President Woodrow Wilson’s request for a declaration of war. Thursday marks the 100th anniversary.
What: Commemoration of the U.S. entry into World War I
When: 12-12:30 p.m. Thursday
Where: Courtyard of War Memorial Auditorium, a building built to honor the 3,400 Tennesseans who died in the war. It’s at 301 Sixth Ave. N., Nashville.
Digitizing history
The Tennessee State Library and Archives is embarking on a statewide effort to scan records, letters, photos and other items about World War I. The project is called “Over Here, Over There: Tennesseans in the First World War.” The project is similar to one the library conducted for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The next event is Thursday in Williamson County at the Williamson County Archives, 611 W. Main St. in Franklin. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
