Green Williamson Smitheal (1835-1905) was a Covington attorney who was elected major of the 51st Tennessee Infantry. He declined the honor but agreed to serve as adjutant. He was wounded in the Battle of Chickamuga. Green was active in the Presbyterian Church, elected state representative and a town alderman.
